Pictures do not appear

Graphmark shows pictures that are stored on your Mac, inside the map’s own folder or a folder within it, in a place it has access to. A picture that fails any of those three conditions is left out of the map, and the Markdown that refers to it is kept unchanged.

Symptom

A map saved as Markdown shows a branch’s title, but the picture you expect under it is missing. The Markdown file still contains a line such as ![](mindmap_assets/diagram.png).

Maps saved as Graphmark packages keep their pictures inside the package and are not affected.

Cause 1: Graphmark has no access to the map’s folder yet

Opening a Markdown map gives Graphmark access to that one file, not to the folder of pictures beside it. Graphmark asks for the folder the first time it needs to write there, for example when you add a picture to the map, and shows the folder’s pictures once it has access.

Solution: give Graphmark access to the map’s folder. Add a picture to any branch; when Graphmark asks for access to the folder, choose Grant Access. Then close the map and open it again. If you added the picture only for this, delete its line in the document pane (⌥⌘E). If Graphmark already has access to a folder that contains the map, such as your whole vault, this cause does not apply. See Graphmark asks for access to a folder.

Cause 2: the picture is outside the map’s folder

Graphmark reads pictures only from the folder the map is in and the folders inside it. A path that leads out of that folder, such as ../media/diagram.png, or a full path such as /Users/you/Pictures/diagram.png, is skipped.

Solution: move the picture into the map’s folder or a folder inside it, and change the path in the Markdown to match. Alternatively, drag the picture onto the branch again, and Graphmark saves a copy in the right place.

Cause 3: the picture is on the web

A picture whose path is a web address, such as https://example.com/diagram.png, is not downloaded. Graphmark does not load anything from the internet to show a map.

Solution: save the picture to your Mac and drag it onto the branch.

Cause 4: the path does not match the file

The path in the Markdown is relative to the map, and the file name has to match exactly, including the extension.

Solution: open the document pane (⌥⌘E) and compare the path under the branch with the file’s name and folder in the Finder.
