Graphmark asks for access to a folder

Choose Grant Access with the suggested folder selected. Graphmark asks once for each folder, remembers your answer after you quit, and from then on opens and saves everything inside that folder without asking.

Symptom

A panel appears with a message that begins “Graphmark needs access to” followed by a folder name, and a button labelled Grant Access.

Cause

Graphmark comes from the Mac App Store, and macOS lets such apps open only the files and folders you give them. Opening a map gives Graphmark that one file. When it needs another file in the same folder, or wants to write one there, it has to ask for the folder.

The panel says what Graphmark wants to do:

The panel saysWhen it appears
to follow links between the files in itYou followed a wikilink or a link to another map.
to open files in itYou followed a link to another file.
to keep this map’s colours, positions and connections beside itYou saved a Markdown map that has styling, and Graphmark needs to write its companion file.
to keep this map’s pictures in a folder beside itYou added a picture to a Markdown map, and Graphmark needs to create the picture folder.

Solution

  1. Check the folder shown in the panel. For an Obsidian vault, move up to the top folder of the vault, so that one answer covers every note in it.
  2. Click Grant Access.

Access to a folder includes every folder inside it. Graphmark keeps the access after you quit and relaunch it.

If you move or rename the folder, Graphmark asks again the next time it needs it.

If you decline

Nothing is lost, but Graphmark does less:

  • A link does nothing, and the map you are in stays as it is.
  • A Markdown map is still saved. Its styling, positions and connections are not written beside it, so they are missing the next time you open it. Graphmark does not ask again for the same folder until you quit and reopen it.
  • A picture is kept inside the Markdown file instead of in a folder. You can move it out later with File > Move Pictures Beside the File…; see Pictures.

To keep a map, its styling and its pictures together without any folder access, save it as a Graphmark package: choose File > Duplicate, save the copy and choose Graphmark Map as its format.
